Understanding South African University Admissions

What is APS (Admission Point Score)?

The Admission Point Score (APS) is a standardized scoring system used by South African universities to evaluate Grade 11/12 performance. It's calculated by converting your final marks into points:

  • 80-100%: 7 points
  • 70-79%: 6 points
  • 60-69%: 5 points
  • 50-59%: 4 points
  • 40-49%: 3 points
  • 30-39%: 2 points
  • 0-29%: 1 point

Your APS is calculated from your best 6 subjects, including compulsory subjects like Home Language and Mathematics or Mathematical Literacy. Life Orientation is not included in the APS calculation.

NBT Tests: Academic Literacy and Quantitative

The National Benchmark Tests (NBT) assess your academic readiness for university study. They consist of:

  • Academic Literacy (AL): Tests reading, interpreting, and communicating in academic contexts
  • Quantitative Literacy (QL): Evaluates mathematical problem-solving in real-world contexts
  • Mathematics (MAT): Assesses mathematical knowledge and skills

Performance Levels:

  • Proficient: Well-prepared for university study
  • Upper Intermediate: Well-prepared with minimal support needed
  • Intermediate: Adequately prepared with possible support needed
  • Basic: Not well-prepared, additional support recommended
